Client Success Story: Bel Inizio, Houston, TX

Bel Inizio, which means beautiful beginning in Italian, is a Houston-based nonprofit that helps disadvantaged women develop self-confidence and life skills through fitness and nutrition. Bel Inizio partners with women’s shelters, housing programs, and community organizations to guide a group of women, through a 10-week program where they meet twice a week to exercise and learn about nutrition and other life skills, such as managing money and critical thinking. Participants train to complete a 5K at the end of the program, which helps prepare them for the ultimate race — the race for a better life.

When Covid shut everybody down in March 2020, Bel Inizio lost access to the meeting locations provided by their collaborating organizations. Their program, and all material supporting it, was 100% based on in-person contact. Over the next two to three months, Theresa Strong and her team, modified their program to fit into a remote world. But the online program had limited success as their program is based on developing relationships and trust, which is much harder through only virtual experiences. Bel Inizio‘s fundraising was also hit hard, after their biggest events, such as their Fiesta dinner on May 5th, their 5K race in the fall, and the 2021 Houston Marathon, were canceled to abide by Covid group gathering and social distancing mandates.

After spending some time getting to know Bel Inizio‘s program and mission, it became abundantly clear that the organization was qualified under several government mandates in addition to the quarters where they suffered a significant loss in revenue, and in spite of having only a few W2 employees on staff, the Employee Retention Credit they are expecting will, in their own words, have a huge impact on their programs in 2023.

On March 28th Bel Inizio is hosting Birdies for Bel Inizio, a Fundraiser at Wildcat Golf Club. 12000 Almeda Rd, Houston TX, 77045. To attend as a golfer, sponsor the event, or give a monetary gift, visit https://e.givesmart.com/events/vcc/
